Determining Your Wire Halyard Length And Diameter

halyard sizing chart

How to determine what diameter halyard you need: The diameter of the halyard depends on the allowable rope diameter of the pulley on your specific flagpole. Please measure your pulley width to confirm the size you need BEFORE purchasing. If you bought your pulley from us and don’t know the diameter, give us a call and we can help you out!

How long should my halyard be? We have a very simple trick to finding your required halyard length. Typically, this is the height of the flagpole multiplied by two (2). For example: a 30 foot flagpole would need about 60’ of halyard. We multiplied the height of the pole (30’) by 2 for the final value of 60' of halyard rope. It’s always better to have a little extra than not enough!

How can I connect the two ends together?

  3. Margaret "Peggy" Bundy asks Apr 29, 2024

I am tired of my regular rope breaking and this looks strong with a wire in the center, will it work for me?

    1. Gettysburg Flag Works answers Apr 29, 2024

The wire center halyard is not recommended for external halyard poles that take regular rope (halyard). While you're correct, the wire core is much stronger, it is so stiff it is very difficult to bend and put thru a pulley or tie off to a cleat, making it almost impossible to use. It also may wear out your flagpole hardware, which isn't really designed for the wire center halyard. We generally recommend only regular halyard for external poles. Chances are there is something else wrong with your pole that is causing the normal rope to break faster than it should - please call us to ask for assistance and we can help troubleshoot!
